16th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry, officer’s 23mm gilt button.

£48.00

A good example of the officer’s gilt button of the 16th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry of the pattern adopted in 1885 when the regiment was raised again in Ambala for service on the North West Frontier. This 23mm size was the largest worn on the tunic and the great coat. It was replaced in 1900 by a similar pattern but with the regimental number altered to XVI  from 16 and with Victorian crown, although from 1896 the regiment used the general Bengal Lancers pattern.  This example has the rather uncommon backmark SIMPSON & ROOK, 9 & 10 LITTLE BRITAIN, LONDON.  aug3/ 2

This example is the last of four examples of thei scarce button which we acquired early this year,
