33rd Foot. Officers’ Mess silver table spoons from the reign of George IV, 1826
£180.00
Two examples of officers’ mess silver of the 33rd Regiment of Foot, which later became the 1st Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment. These spoons, engraved with the regimental number 33 within a wreath of immortelles, are of the hourglass pattern and are hallmarked London 1826 with the maker’s mark RC probably for Randall Chatterton who registered his mark in 1825. The spoons are both used and have been rather heavily polished over their many years of use in the mess both at home and on various campaigns. Together they weigh 183 gms [a little less than 6 troy ounces]. The regiment fought in the Sutlej, Crimean, and Indian Mutiny campaigns and most of the wars following its change of title in 1881. In the 19th century spoons of this size were widely used for eating soups and the ragouts which were so popular at the time. The price is for two spoons. sep30/1
One of the illustrations shows one of these spoons against a serving, dessert, and tea spoon for comparative size. The other spoons and from my private cutlery drawers and not for sale.
