SRINAGAR. Vintage photograph of a mosque.

£70.00

A full plate vintage photograph, 11 x ¾ ins, showing the Shah Hamadan Mosque on the banks of the Jhelum River at Srinagar, 1890s. The very distinctive architectural style of this mosque is found in several in Kashmir and the river traffic is typical of Srinagar city. The reverse has a similar sized print of the Residency Entrance in Srinagar. The Resident at Kashmir held one of the most important posts in the days of the Raj because of the strategic importance of the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The post of Resident to the Maharaja was a sort after one not least because the area offered some of the best sport that was so valued at the time. This good image came from an old album put together by Lt Col Peter Bairnsfather who commanded the 14th Bengal Lancers, Murray’s Jat Lancers. sep21/1
