5th Dragoon Guards. A naive portrait of a trooper, mid 19th century
£145.00
An attractive, rather naive portrait of a named trooper of the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales’s) Dragoon Guards. The sitter is unusually named in neat lettering along the bottom of the watercolour GEORGE CLARKSON, Vth DRAGOON GUARDS. Although painted in a naive style the watercolour shows the trooper’s uniform quite accurately. He is wearing the 1847 pattern helmet. On its return from the Crimea the regiment had its headquarters in Edinburgh. The watercolour on paper measures 7¼ x 7½ ins and retains an old backing board to which the lower inch of the paper is glued. mar14/2
