71st Highland Light Infantry. A 16mm open backed pewter button with the unusual backmark HOWELL GILPIN & CO. This is a very well made button in unusually good condition for a pewter example, so many of which are very degraded, even those which are not the result of metal detecting. The button retains its original iron shank. The maker is one I cannot recall coming across before. feb27/5
