A viceregal envelope embossed on the flap with the large royal arms used only on formal communications form the Viceroy. the 6¾ x 4½ ins envelope is addressed in a fine secretarial hand To Her Highness Nawab Sultan Jahan Begam of Bhopal . The last of the female rulers of the state ruled from 1901 to 1926, The use of the imperial crown on the arms and the provenance suggest this was used in the period when Lord Minto was Viceroy. The royal arms in this large gold embossed version was only used on formal Viceregal letters and the envelopes containing them and he seldom wrote to other than the senior ruling princes, most correspondemce being conducted via secretaries, agents, or residents. aug22/1

Provenance: This eenvelope came with a collection of letters recived by the Begams of Bhopal which we acquired several years ago.
