Captain Simpson of the 48th Madras Light Infantry, c 1863

A very good carte de visite by C. Hawkins, Brighton School of Photography, 36 Preston Street showing the officer full length in a studio portrait. It is identified in ink in a contemporary hand Capt Simpson, late 48th M.N.I. 23 Sept 1863 . Further dates of his service are added in a later collector’s hand showing him rising to the rank of colonel by 1869.  He appears in the January 1863 Indian Army and Civil Service List as being on the Cadre of the late 48th but at that time seerving with the 36th Madras Native Infantry.    jan12/2
