Crown Prince & Princess Frederick of Germany with their children, 18744

An attractive and informal cabinet card portrait by Hills & Saunders, 36 Porchester Terrace, London W. showing Crown Prince Frederick of Germany with his wife, the Princess Victoria, the first child of Queen Victoria. This charming, sepia toned family group includes the future Kaiser William II, already showing his penchant fro uniform in a sailor suit. The sitters are identified in a contemporary hand on the card. The copy in the National Portrait Gallery is dated to 1874. Frederick was only destined to rule as Emperor for 99 days before his son succeeded him in the Year of the Three Emperors 1888.   jan30/4
