A portrait of a very young Donald Ramsey Macdonald by Dalby of 82-83 Wellington St, Woolwich, probably taken when he was a cadet at Woolwich. The bust length portrait shows Macdonald wearing a pill box cap with chinstrap. It measures 2.5 x 4ins and is mounted on a photographer’s card, ov.erall size 7 x 5ins. Donald Ramsey Macdonald was born in 1884 and was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery in 1903, becoming a lieutenant in 1906. In 1912 he was serving with the 48th Battery at Sheffield, was made captain in October 1914 and still serving in that rank in 1916. It is identified on the reverse and came to us with an archive of material from the family Macdonald of Sandside which had several members who served in India and had connections by marriage with the family of the Earls of Elgin and Kincardine. aug25/5
