Professionally re-cased [probably early to mid 20th century] retaining original full light calf boards with marching spine and black title label gilt, excellent clean condition throughout, contemporary armorial bookplate to front pastedown William Brodie of Brodie. This is the first edition of an important work which later became a two volume work with folding map. dec11/1
Provenance: Sold at auction by Sotheby’s from the library of Brodie Castle in the 1960s or 70s. Purchased by Jeffery Bates from the late Stan Paget of Dundee in the 1990s.
William Brodie of Brodie [1799-1873] of Brodie Castle was the son of Lt. Colonel James Brodie of the 11th Madras N.I.. He inherited the title from his grandfather in 1824 and carried out considerable enlargement to the castle.
