GWALIOR, A menu or place holder made for the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1922.
£1,400.00
A very sturdy menu or place setting holder consisting of a rectangular base 62 x 35 x 7 mm which is weighted and supporting a bimetal badge of the Prince’s crest, 40 x 45 mm, with a simple frame behind to support the name card or menu, The exceptional thing abour the holder is that it is dated 11.2.22. engraved\in frontof the crest and further engraved along the base facing the diner THE RESIDENCY GWALIOR . We have many other menu and place holders, usually military, but have never come across one made for a specific meal. The most detailed record of the Royal Visit, The Prince of Wales and the Princes of Indua by Laxmishand Dossabhai Shah [2 vols. Rajkot c 1923, tells us that 11th February 1922 was an exceptionally busy day of tiger shooting and racing where great crowds watched the Prince in the Gymkhana Races. This holder must have been used at the dinner given by the British Resident afterwards. sep15/1
