49th Bengal NI. An officer’s gilt 17mm coatee button of the 49th Bengal Native Infantry with the backmark RANKEN & Co CALCUTTA. The button has the design of the regimental number within a garter displaying the battle honour ARRACAN from the first Burma War 1824-26. This is a button from the East India Company period, worn between the 1820s and 1860. At the start of the Mutiny the regiment is recorded in the East India Register 1858 as having been disarmed at Meean Meer where it had been stated since 1854. The shank is intact but a little bent. nov28/3
