Jhansi. The military cantonment, circa 1890s
£30.00
The full plate vintage photograph measures 11 x 8½ ins and is pasted to an old card album page. There is some staining to the upper half of the image, mainly affecting the sky. Jhansi is best known here as being the small Maratha state ruled by Rani Lakshmibai [1828-1858] who became a champion of the people during the 1857 Rebellion. Although she escaped from the fort after the British took back control she died from woulds received at a battle in Gwalior after she had joined forces with Tantya Topi. apr23/4
