The papers begin with a general review of the situation dated August 1811 from Calcutta to London noting  the great and increasing number and power of the Pindarries, who principally infest the southern parts of Hindoostan and the northern quarter of the Deccan.” The immediate cause of the uprising, rapine and devastation is said to be Scindia’s [The Maharaja of Gwalior] release of two notorious Pindarries, Cheeto and Kurreem, for ransom money. Further reports on the background to the war are given together with accounts of military action under Sir Thomas Hislop. Contributors include Lieut Sydenham, Marquis Wellesley, Mounstuart Elphinstone, Brig-Gen Sir John Malcolm, Jenkins (the Resident at Nagpore), various Collectors, Magistrates, etc.  The Pindaree or Third Maratha War is commemorated in suck clasps to the Army of India Medasl as Seetabuldee & Nagpore .  jul18/1
