RAJPIPLA. Maharana Gambhir Singji, Raja of Rajpipla, c 1877

A very good carte visite by BOURNE & SHEPHERD, PHOTOGRAPHERS, INDIA probably taken around 1875-78 coinciding with the royal visit of the Prince of Wales [later King Emperor Edward VII] and the Imperial Assemblage at Delhi. H. H. Maharana Gambhir Singji, Rana of Rajpipla, an 11 gun salute state in modern day Gujarat, is shown seated in a relaxed pose wearing a turban with ornate sarpech and other jewels. He succeeded to the throne as a young teenager when his father abdicated in his favor in 1860.   The cdv is very particularly toned.  jub30/1
