Title page, [defective contents list], The Almanac for 1854 [25pp unpaginated], 177pp [Street list, bazars, govt establishment, native govts, EICo gradation list, disposition list], pp 179-498 [List of the Honourable East India Company’s Troops on the Bengal Establishment including an index, lists of regimental, staff and departmental officers, distribution of the army, casualty lists, Irregular Cavalry and Infantry], [34 lettered pages, detailing furlough, pay and establishment details], pp499-510 [Bengal Marine Establishment including pilots and pensioners & steam department], Appendix separately paginated 1-485pp. Appendix includes Bengal Post Regulations [pp1-33], Customs duties, tariffs, Calcutta stamp duties, funds, insurance companies, banks, rules and orders of the Supreme Court, Judicature with lists of establishment, Calcutta Police, colleges and schools, charitable societies, Masonic Lodges, Trade list, coins weights & measures, Shipping Arrivals and Departures (pp387-400), domestic occurrences, probates, Alphabetical List of British Subjects (pp 425-482 & p485 the final page, page 483/4 is torn, loose in parts and incomplete and covers names from Ward W S to Wood, Robert). Original printed paper covered boards and half black leather gilt, both covers detached, the front with the ffep & title page and the rear, with the spine still hinged to it, with the last page of Subjects List, there is a six page contents list detached in poor condition and lacking a few pages [it covers the Directory as far as p354 and the Appendix as far as 490. Boards worn and faded but would re-case quite well, the first and last few pages are in poor condition but in general the text block is sound and well stitched. There is an old, indistinct ownership signature to the top of the front board and a ms number 67 to the title page, no other previous ownership markings. As well as listing all the H.E.I.C. troops in the Province, lists of H.M. regiments’ officers are also included, those regiments present being: 9th Lt Dragoons, 10, 22, 24, 29, 32, 52, 53, 60, 61, 70, 75, 80, 81, 87, 95, & 98 Foot. A useful reference work showing the state of the Presidency just a few years before the cataclysmic events that ended the rule of the East India Comany.    aug16/8
