Sir William Jones, orientalist and founder of the Asiatic Society of Bengal
£50.00
A very good engraving of Sir William Jones [1746-1794] on a large sheet of India paper 19 x 13 ins, after the painting by Joshua Reynolds, published 1832 by Harding & Lepard, Pall Mall East with wide borders outside the plate marks and ideal for framing. Jones was a remarkable polymath, a judge in Calcutta, scholar, linguist [said to be able to speak over 25 languages], orientalist, prolific writer. He was a key contributor to the early Journals of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, which he founded. His many achievements are more remarkable considering his relatively short life. His impressive memorial tombstone is to be seen in Park Street Cemetery in Calcutta / Kolkata. sep14/1
