TOWNELEY. An engraved armorial bookplate of John Towneley Esq named beneath his arms, The bookplate, 168 x 97 mm, is in fair condition apart from a small area of loss to the upper left corner.. The ornate Chippendale style treatment of the arms suggests a date of the mid 18th century. John Towneley [1697 – 1782] of Towneley Hall. Lancashire was a great scholarly collector much of whose collection is now in the British Museum. F29652. feb10/12
