VIctorian pith helmet for India by one of the leading London makers

£120.00

The white helmet with green interior has the leather head lining loosely included but seems to be for a head size of 7¼ to 7½.  The label shows this example to be ELLWOOD’S PATENT . Ellwood  & Sons were the leading London maker of sun helmets for officers and civilians goimg out to India from the 1840s. I am told that this officially as Ellwood 58 and was popularly known as the flattened beehive helmet and was in use by soe reguments, such as the Gloucesters, in the 1890s.  sep19/1

I am intrigued that the manufacturer was still using the East India Company’s crest on its label decades after the Company’s demise.
